As usual I check my (g)mail for the nth time and logged out.. and the logout page was a link to one of the gmail articles (i am not able to find the article now).. This article told me that gmail had a new "Delete" button and there were a few other blogger's comments listed below.. Just went thru a couple of them..
One of the things that struck me ... People were complaining that Google was being just like MSFT - lazy and monopolistic and blah blah blah... Not sure if someone already thought about this...
GMAIL did not have a delete button earlier because Google wanted you to archive e-mails.. thats what the 2GB is for !! so that you dont end up having to delete e-mails.. But now that they have added a delete button (albeit after about an year or so) have they not been successful in their pihlosophy of storing e-mails forever ? Do people find that searching for mails is not being effective ? OR is it just that they cant come out of the habit of deleting e-mails every few hours !!! (I used to do that when I had a measly 2 mb storage on Hotmail.. what with all the junk and crappy forwards)
I strongly believe in that fact that there is no free lunches in business... so WHY in the world would google want to give away so much space and have people store all their e-mails...definitely there's a motive behind it.. (not necessarily monetary).. one of it must be to leverage the e-mail content to drive the ads..
Coming back to the delete button.. I think its a setback for Gmal that they had to (succumb to user pressure??) provide a delete button.. what funny is that they popmpusly declare that a delete button is available now.. Could anyone have imagined that a mail service provider would be thrilled to provide a delete button !!!
Thats it for now !!
